Trail 5
Al Bahr Shrine to Sunrise Highway Trail
PCT Miles 47.54 to 59.47
Well today was probably the most challenging day so far, and I don't have to search too hard to figure out why.
It was our first consecutive day hiking, and although I know we are going to have to do that the whole way up, I was definitely still feeling all 24 miles from yesterday (READ: BLISTERS).
I was also feeling a little mentally fatigued going into it. Amy and Johny joined us for a semi-belated Mother's Day get together, joined by a decent amount of prep for this and the hiking.
I was thinking about all of this when I realized I was building a negative snowball in my mind. So at that point I made a conscious decision. I decided I would make today a personal challenge to conquer my mind.
I opened it and let it be lifted by the hilarious and endearing couple who were riding a tandem bike around the country. I forced myself to open my eyes and marvel at the spectacular views and soaring birds.
I challenged myself to be an ordinary guy with an extraordinary appreciation of life.
I also found that when I put myself in this mind frame, talking with other thru-hikers became even more special. It was easy to give our extra water away or give someone a hitch to town (yesterday). And when you're always paying it forward, it becomes easier to ask for help when it's your turn.
